China Against Libya』s Air Strikes

As the UN coalition continues its air strikes in Libya,

dictator Gadhafi publicly vowed to fight to the end.

The Chinese government criticizes strongly

the UN coalition air strikes against the Libyan ruler.

China didn』t veto Libya』s air strikes resolution

at the UN Security Council

Why is the Chinese government belying itself?

In the morning of March 23, in Libya』s capital Tripoli,

were heard sounds of explosions and artilleries.

Several hours earlier, at his residence in Tripoli,

Gadhafi appeared before its supporters

to say that Libya would not bow to the West,

and preparations for war have been made.

This is Gadhafi』s 1st public appearance

since March 15.

Leaders of U.S., France and UK

reached a consensus that NATO should play

a key role in the military actions.

Currently, Gadhafi's forces and Libyan rebels are

having fierce battles in several cities in Libya.

Chinese regime continues its overwhelming criticism

of the coalition and the air strikes.

On March 23, Chinese Communist Party (CCP)』s

Newspaper, Global Times, published the editorial:

"Do not make own political goals international".

It criticized discussions posted

on a well-known Chinese site about the topic

“human rights are above sovereignty”,

and accusing them in playing "own goals”

in international politics.

CCP』s People's Daily attacked

the French President Nicola Sarkozy, who played

a critical role in approving UN Resolution 1973.

The CCP could have vetoed the UN Resolution.

Instead, the Chinese government abstained,

giving green light to coalition air strikes in Libya.

Why is the Chinese government contradicting itself?

Current Issues commentator, Chen Pokong,

believes CCP』s criticism and condemnation

of the bombing comes from its political needs.

Using their current actions as standards,

the world should have stopped CCP's atrocities

on Tiananmen Massacre. Beijing is worried

that when similar incidents occur again,

the international community may not tolerate it.

There is more for the CCP to fear, however.

Besides the military intervention in Libya,

the international community also started

an international judicial inquiry on Gadhafi.

The UN Security Council』s Resolution 1970 includes

the submission of Gadhafi』s

"crimes against humanity"

to the International Criminal Tribunal in Hague.

Wang Dan, a student leader of 1989 movements,

wrote that if Gadhafi is finally sent

to International Court,

the CCP』s leaders will be most shaken.

Radio France Internationale cited Wang』s article,

sooner or later, large-scale protests will take place.

By that time, CCP leaders will face a choice:

dialogue with people, or use force to suppress them?

The International Criminal Tribunal prosecutor

announced, that a judicial investigation of Gadhafi

might be undertaken in May 2011.

The International Criminal Court in the Hague

was establishe for the Nuremberg trials after WWII.

Some former Yugoslavian leaders and

Sudanese government officials were tried there.

The establishment of the court is a serious warning

to tyrants who suppress their people by force.

It is a Damocles Sword, hanging over their heads.
