China』s Freedom Writers

Ye Fu, winner of the annual

Independent Chinese PEN Center』s (ICPC)

『Freedom Literature Award』, said in his acceptance

speech that the award was not for writing,

but for courage and conscience. The blogs

of Ran Yunfei and Teng Biao, who are both detained

by Chinese authorities, are nominated

for Deutsche Welle』s blog competition. Ye Fu hopes

more people will be like the kid who dared to tell

the truth from the tale: 『Emperor』s New Clothes』.

Hubei-based Ye Fu (real name Zheng Shiping)

received ICPC』s Freedom Literature Award in 2010.

That year, his book "Mother on the River"

also received the 『Book of the Year』 award

at the Taipei International Book Fair.

Ye Fu said that the freedom to write

shouldn』t need to be rewarded. It』s hard to imagine

that there is a literature award, called 『Freedom』.

Ye Fu: "It rewards only those Chinese writers

that toil for their natural birthright of writing freely.

The freedom to write is a given right to people.

It shouldn』t need to be rewarded,

but to be exercised by the writers voluntarily."

Ye Fu told Deutsche Welle in an interview

that in a country with 3,000 years of civilization,

few can write in their mother tongue freely.

『Freedom』 is almost equivalent to crime.

Ye Fu: "There are numerous innocent victims

of 『literary investigations』. Numbers of new prisoners

criminalized for their speech continue to grow.

The freedom torch, in the thin air of the Far East,

is unable to light the way for this suffering nation."

On March 22, Deutsche Welle published a list

of blog contestants on its website: Ran Yunfei's blog

was nominated for 『Best Cross-Language Award』

and 『Award for the Best Chinese-Language Blog』.

Teng Biao's blog was nominated for

the 』Special Award for Human Rights』. Tiger Temple

was nominated for "Best Video Blog Award".

According to Radio Free Asia, Ran and Teng』s

nomination renewed people』s interest in detainees.

Many netizens urge Chinese authorities to release

prisoners of conscience, including Liu Xianbin.

Ran Yunfei is Sichuan Literature magazine』s editor.

He is a long-time advocate of democratic movements.

In February 2011, after the Jasmine Revolution,

he was arrested for "subversion of state power".

On February 19, Beijing-based Dr. Teng Biao,

a lecturer at China Politics and Law University

was also arrested. The authorities planted devices

in his home to block signals. He has not been heard

from since. His blog has been closed down.

Liu Xianbin participated in the Tiananmen Square

protests. After spending 13 years in prison,

Liu continued to participate in human rights activities.

In June 2010, he was detained by National Security,

and again accused of "subversion of state power".

His case will be tried on March 25, 2011.

Also a participant in the Tiananmen protests,

Ye Fu was sentenced to 6 years in prison

for "divulging state secrets",and released in 1995.

He then started writing as a freelancer.

Ye Fu told Deutsche Welle that in this day and age,

everyone needs to be righteous, honest and brave.

He will continue to write freely in the future.
