Foreign Experts in “Leaping Firewall”

Foreigners in China find it impossible to gain access to

social websites such as Twitter and Facebook.

Thanks to this, most of them become experts in

using “leaping the firewall” software.

If you often visit websites, such as Twitter, Facebook

or Youtube, you may find it annoying when you come to China.

Foreign websites that can spread information quickly

are blocked by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) authorities.

However, Twitter, Facebook and Youtube were usable

in China during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

They were soon blocked again after the games finished.

Foreign Reporter in China: I haven』t been able

to access Facebook or Twitter for over a year now.

Many Chinese netizens are experts in using

software to “leap the wall”.

Many foreigners working

in China “do as the Romans do”.

As a result, they become experts

in using anti-blockage software, too.

Foreign reporter in China: I think most foreign

journalists are used to using anti-blockage software.

It is nevertheless unreasonable and unfair.

Without the Internet, we cannot work well.

It is not convenient. However,

there are many other solutions, such as the VPN.

VPN is short for “Virtue Private Network”

and is used for breaking China』s Internet blockade

to browse overseas websites.

Another “wall-leaping” expert reporter

suggests that it is superfluous for

the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to do so.

Foreign Reporter in China: It』s really superfluous

for the CCP to try to block the Internet,

given the widely used VPN and other technologies.

People can easily visit foreign websites.

Some things can never be blocked.

It』s really unnecessary and useless for CCP to do so.

The foreign reporters are more concerned about

the CCP』s control over education.

China has the world』s largest population of netizens.

The time spent on Internet surfing by

Chinese netizens exceeds that of any other country.

The informational transmission via the worldwide web poses

an ever greater challenge to the CCP』s internet blockade.
