Prices Grow Volatile in China's Agricultural Market

Recently in China, the prices of potatoes are increasing greatly.

Peasants are writing micro-blogs to promote the sale of

their potatoes—a new trend drawing wide attention.

One expert says a gap in agricultural production and

sales means prices are very unstable.

The government is asked to start-up production

and marketing companies, and support large enterprises and

peasants to develop the existing market.

Whether it is apples from Shandong, bananas from Hainan,

and tomatoes from Guizhou or potatoes from Inner Mongolian,

Gansu—across China, the surge and slump of

food prices are making peasants desperate.

Analyst from the Rural Development Institute of

the Chinese Academy of Social Science,

Li Guoxiang, says an imbalance in the production and

sales of agricultural products means prices are always fluctuating greatly.

Li Guoxiang: “he prices of many agricultural products are

in great fluctuation, the produce isn't reaching the larger market.

Also the gap between the original production price and

the market price brings problems—the producers always suffer greatly.”

Now China's potatoes are in prime season,

but a huge amount of potatoes will not reach the market.

Following high potato prices in 2010,

many peasants have increased potato production this year

leading to a slump in market prices.

Li Guoxiang says the production and marketing relationship

must be organized better to solve issues of unmarketable agricultural production.

Li: “We should unite production with the wider market,

to avoid producing goods blindly.

I think the best solution is for the government to introduce,

guide or support large enterprises to develop production

and marketing, and help peasants circulate their goods to

a wider market. Renting stalls for selling produce is

too expensive in large cities, so peasants are confined.

Many agricultural products are transported by small traders,

increasing the distribution fee. Large logistic enterprises

are rarely transporting agricultural products.”

This year, China's potato production is estimated to

reach above 70 million tons, a significant rise compared with

the 2010 production of less than 50 million.

In Inner Mongolian Province, potato farming has taken an

additional 1.1 million acres of land,

increasing production by around 2.6 million tons.
