65-years-old Rights Defender Captured

Hu Ti-he, a 65-years-old rights-defense representative

from in Enshi, Hubei province, was captured by local police.

Hu was accused of discussing

and inciting subversion of state power.

Hu was released three hours later,

thanks to the open support of over 1,000 villagers.

Human rights group suspect collusion between local police

and local power to pressure villagers for their rights defense.

On the afternoon of February 1, the police of Enshi

Autonomous Prefecture, Hubei, took away Hu Tihe.

Hu and rights activist Huang Qi were accused of discussing

subverting of state power' matters via instant messaging QQ.

Huang Qi, chief of China Tianwang Human Rights Service,

said that the officials' alleges and evidences are fabricated.

According to Huang, Hu Tihe never chats with him via QQ.

Huang said that Hu Tihe is 65 years old, and have never

used QQ, thus the officials' allegations are ridiculous.

Authorities have undertaken a series of despicable tactics,

just to frame up Hu Tihe.

Hu's son confirmed his father never talked

with anyone via QQ.

According to Huang Qi, the reason why the police

captured Hu is due to his defense of human rights locally.

Hu often led local farmers to initiate rights-defense activities,

achieving some positive results.

However, these events exposed scandals

of the Chinese Communist Party' (CCP) local authorities.

Huang Qi revealed, the CCP Hubei provincial authorities

planned to move 8,000 villagers back to their original places.

The relevant policy may threaten local power's interests.

The villagers' moving back will end a project of local tourism

development, with expected annual profit of RMB 3.2 billion.

And local tour companies will also face closure.

Local police might follow local power's instructions to capture

Hu Ti-he, said Huang, a representative of local immigrants.

The capture is a warning for Hu to not initiate new rights

defense activities on the villagers' moving-back issue.

Hu's son-in-law witnessed the capture of Hu. He said local

authorities took Hu's land without proper compensation.

The land is worth RMB 120,000 per acre,

but he was compensated only with RMB 6,000 per acre.

So Hu wants to seek society's help to solve the problem.

Hu reveals that the police threatened him not to defend

local villagers for their land rights.

Hu Ti-he: "We were caught and taken to Public Security

Bureau of Enshi City yesterday.

Two chiefs threatened us to hand over the reporter

right away. It was just extorting confessions by torture.”

According to Radio Free Asia reports, 10 years ago, tourism

developer occupied the original home of 8,000 villagers.

The village was moved to a remote area, living in poverty.

The villagers' average annual income is RMB 1,500 (~$240).

Hu Ti-he often petitioned to CCP local authorities, appealing

to them for attention to the villagers' life problems.

Thus Hu is being deemed as a trouble-maker

by the local CCP authorities.
