Bo's Ally Defection to US Consulate

Recently Wang Lijun resigned as the chief

of the Chongqing City Police.

Wang Lijun is known to be a long-time ally of Bo Xilai,

the CCP' (Chinese Communist Party) chief in Chongqing.

According to information, Wang sought refuge

in the US consulate in Chengdu.

On February 8, the Chongqing government announced,

that Wang took a "therapeutic" leave due to overwork.

External sources said Wang's defection angered

the most senior level of the Chinese Communist Party.

The central government decided to conduct a full investigation

on Bo Xilai, according to a disclosure of Wang Lijun.

According to microblogs, on the night of February 7,

a large number of police with machine guns appeared

around the US consulate in Chengdu city.

They blocked the roads, set up checkpoints,

and thoroughly searched the passing vehicles and pedestrians.

According to Boxun.com, Wang Lijun said he was attending

a school event, but later on he disguised himself and escaped.

On the same night, he sought refuge in the US consulate

in Chengdu and disclosed a lot of inside information.

Much of it is said to be related to Bo Xilai,

as well as some state secrets about the US government.

Hearing of the news, Bo ordered the Mayor of Chongqing,

Huang Qifan to blockade the US consulate for 24 hours.

Over 70 police cars were sent out,

to occupy the streets around the consulate.

In the morning of February 8, the US government returned

Wang to the Chinese national security officers.

When Wang came out from the US consulate, Huang wanted

to bring him back to Chongqing, but had conflicts with the national security officers.

Wang told the national security officers that Bo is ambitious

and he wanted to take Bo down.

Wang said he had already transferred

important information abroad.

Due to intervention by the central government, Wang was

eventually taken away by the national security officers.

Cai Yongmei, executive chief editor of HK' Open Magazine,

said this incident was not a coincidence.

Cai Yongmei: "I think

he knew he wouldn't be granted a political asylum by the US.

In order to be granted an asylum, you must be proven

that you were politically persecuted.

Wang's case is part of the internal power struggle

within the Chinese Communist Party.

I think Wang went to the US consulate because he didn』t want

to be plotted by others, so he spoke out to increase the impact."

Wang Xing, a reporter of Southern Metropolis Daily, wrote

in his microblog that Chengdu police officer verified the news.

His relative, Mr Zhang, also working for the police force

in Chengdu, also verified this news about Wang Lijun.

Zhang: "He went to the US consulate in Chengdu.

He went to seek political asylum.

But the US consulate did not deal with him

and informed the police and the government.

He is probably a scapegoat of the government.

There are a lot of anti-crime activities in Chongqing.

A lot of people are implicated.

Maybe that's why he is seen as a scapegoat."

According to Reuters, the spokesperson of the US Embassy,

Richard Buangan, said he is not in a position to comment on Wang's incident.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Liu Weimin,

was asked about Wang's incident too.

Liu said the Chongqing government has already provided

information and he has nothing else to add.

On February 8, Chongqing government posted on a microblog

of Xinhua, Wang Lijun took "therapeutic" leave for overwork.

Boxun.com disclosed that Wang's defection angered

the most senior authorities of the central government.

A fled of CCP official to US consulate

was unheard of in history.

The CCP decided to conduct investigation on Bo Xilai

according to Wang's disclosure.

It is said that Bo and his wife are now very nervous.

Cai Yongmei: "There are definitely issues in Chongqing,

i.e. there is a lot of corruption in the anti-crime movement.

When the CCP seeks to clean up its act,

they may first deal with Wang.

Bo maybe wanted to sacrifice Wang,

but Wang resisted.

So when Wang was rejected by the US,

he was transferred to the national security.

Wang would not be dealt with

by the Chongqing government.

If Chongqing government were to handle this,

they may murder him in order to silence him."

According to a report of Xinkauibao, CCP's chief of Jiangjin

District in Chongqing, Guang Haixiang, has been appointed as CCP's chief of Chongqing Police.

He may be appointed as the new chief of Chongqing Police.

It is said that Bo Xilai's anti-crime movement

is an important trump card of the Jiang Zemin faction.

Wang is the leader in anti-crime movement.

If he falls, it may signal that Bo will fall as well.

Jiang Weiping, the former Director of the Northeast Office

of Wen Wei Po in Hong Kong,

said Bo may become the first princeling to be jailed

for corruption and perverting the law.

NTD reporters Chang Chun, Li Yuanhan and Zhouping.
