No Way towards Justice for Disfigured Young Girl

Tao Rukun, son of a Hefei official, set fire to a young girl

known as Zhou Yan, at her rejection of his love.

Only 5 months later have authorities started victim injury assessment

after pressure of public opinion. Results are yet to be concluded.

On Sept. 17 2011, 17-year Zhou Yan, refused to be girlfriend

to her classmate Tao Rukun.

Tao set fire to her with oil, causing her disfigurement.

Although Zhou’s injuries were not life threatening,

she was however scared for life.

Zhou suffered serious burns to her face, neck, chest and leg,

also with the loss of one ear.

Zhou’s attorney Li Zhixian said, Tao asked the Zhou family

not to report the attack to the police.

Saying he is unlikely to be detained any longer than 3 days,

since his parents are government officials.

Tao’s parents are currently officials in Hefei Audit Office and

Hefei City Planning Bureau.

Tao is currently in detention and his parents are seeking

his bail.

Li Zhixian, Zhou Yan’s attorney stated: “Tao’s family first

promised to provide all medical expenses,

but then refused to cover even the most basic of costs

for treatment.

Besides this, the legal investigation proceeds extremely slowly,

while the suspect is set to be released on bail.

Zhou’s parents feel unable to face the difficulties alone,

and are now forced to publicize the whole event.”

NTDTV Commentator Jiesen believes the concept of

love has been badly distorted among the youth of today in China.

Jiesen comments: “It indeed calls for serious reflection.

Why are children so obsessed with personal emotions?

Without fully understanding them, they are already corrupted

by these distorted conceptions.

The phenomena of mistresses and extramarital affairs

are against human traditions.

Yet today they celebrate the ability of obtaining mistresses,

which is a distorted mixture of emotion and personal authority.”

Prior to this, authorities did not carry out any form of

injury assessment for Zhou Yan.

Not until Zhou’s mother released the case over the internet on

the 24th, the results have yet to be concluded and released.

Jiesen says, the victim of this case can only resort to the

internet, five months after the crime, seeking legal protection.

Such a long process of forensics and medical identification,

shows exactly how many difficulties the victim’s family now faces.

On 26th, a person claiming to be Tao’s father said on the

internet that Zhou and Tao were actually girlfriend and boyfriend.

After the incident the Zhou’s family reportedly demanded

the Tao family pay 10 million yuan in compensation.

The Zhou family denied asking for any more,

other than compensation for medical expenses.

They also denounced the Tao family for seeking

their son’s absolution.

Jiesen says: “In the process of legal investigation,

any attempt to obstruct investigation should be criticized.

If officials’ personal relations influence the judgment,

they will be held responsible.”

Media in Mainland China commented that the tragedy has

continued without any final judgment.

Some comments say: the face is already destroyed;

do not destroy the justice.
