Bernard Fehon, a financial planner, was impressed by Shen Yun’s final show of 2011 in Sydney, Australia.

Dance teacher Melissa Caltiviano brought 144 students to see the show. This is the second year she has brought students to the show.

“It is amazing it is an absolutely spectacular performance. The students are loving it. It is a very interesting way for them to see and learn a little bit about the Chinese culture… "

各位讀者好：

美國神韻藝術團剛結束澳洲的巡演，上週末來到台灣桃園首演（debut），場場爆滿，享受過這場無與倫比（Incomparable）的神韻饗宴的人們，都會不約而同的驚呼：真是太精采、壯觀了（spectacular）！提醒大家千萬不要錯過這場史無前例（unprecedented）的演出。

我們今天就先從spectacular這個字談起。-spect這個字根是“看”的意思。語言不是今天的發明，它是文明的產物，是從人與人的互動中產生的，從古代一直流傳下來，隨著人類活動的多樣化與社會的複雜化，文字的內涵也在不斷地增加、愈來愈豐富。

但即使在最簡單的社會形式中，人也是一張嘴吧、兩隻眼睛、兩隻耳朵、兩隻手、兩隻腳…等等。那麼嘴巴會說、眼睛會看、耳朵會聽，手會拿、會丟、會射、會放置…，腳呢會走、會跑、來來去去…，那麼最早期的字根就從中產生了。

那麼“看”這個動作，可以是see, look, watch等字，但在古希臘羅馬文字中，-spect, -vis也是“看”的意思，雖然在當代並不成為一個單字，然而卻是很重要的字根。在漫長的語言形成過程中，許多有關「看」的衍伸字，就是從-spect, -vis衍伸而來。

這些動作字根，配上時間、位置、狀態、數量……等字首，就會各自形成不同的意涵的字彙。舉例如下：

常用字根 –spect=to look，看

1.inspect=in-+-spect, v.調查（to look into, 看進去）

2.respect=re-+-spect, v.尊敬（to look again, 尊敬所以再看一次）

3.suspect=su-(under)+-spect, n.嫌犯（to look under, 嫌犯眼睛都朝地下看）

4.expect=e(ex, out)+-spect, v.期望（to look out，向窗外望夫）

5.retrospect=retro-(back)+-spect, v. 回顧（to look back）

常用字根 –vis = to see, 看

1.visible: adj. 可看的見的

2.invisible: adj. 看不見的（in- 亦為否定字首）

3.vision: n. 視野、願景

4.television: n. 電視（tele- = far, 電視可看到很遠如紐約的影像）

5.revise: v. 修正（to see again, 修正當然得再看一遍）＠
