Li Chengpeng Mocks Chinese Society

The mainland writer Li Chengpeng interacted with his fans

on the opening ceremony of Hong Kong Book Fair.

During the event, he sarcastically criticized mainland China』s

wide spread of melamine, rampant frauds, moral decay

and mainstream scholars』 hypocrisy and their kissing up

the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

His humorous comments drew incessant laughter.

On the opening ceremony,

Li Chengpeng frankly said that to make a living,

some ex-soccer journalists and sports directors

had become critics, columnists and popular writers.

He classifies mainland Chinese writers into three categories:

Self-patronizing, mistress and evil.

He then demonstrated writer Yu Dan』s T-step on CCTV.

Yu is classified by him as of the “mistress type.”

Li Chengpeng: (mimicking Yu Dan) T-step,

when you encounter setbacks, don』t blame the society.

Ask your own heart.

Take a step back and you will find the perfect answer.

Oh, my goodness! When city inspector gives you troubles,

don』t complain.

When your boss doesn』t give you a raise, don』t complain.

Ask your own heart, this is so mysterious (to me)!

Your heart will never find the answers,

so you will never get a raise.

On the surface, Yu Dan is doing T-step.

In reality, she is wearing T-back. ”

Regarding his impression of Hong Kong,

he joked that the air in Hong Kong is too fresh

and it increases his lung capacity.

So, He feels more courageous.

However, since he wants to go back to mainland,

he doesn』t dare speak too loudly.

People and animals here

all have a sense of security.

Li Chengpeng: Police officer, can I take a picture with you?

Immediately, the officer smiled very politely.

Back at home, (the Police would say) stand right there,

don』t move, and show your ID.

This is a city where even the police

have a sense of security.

Driving by the Red Cross, ah! I immediately took a picture!

This is my first time seeing a Red Cross!

I watched many films of underground gangsters

featuring actors like Chow Yun fat and Andy Lau.

So I asked how is the mafia doing? (He said) pretty good,

the mafia is making money by running business now.

I said in mainland, the mafia is in charge of forced demolitions.

Our officials are doing mafia』s work;

mistresses do the work of the anti-corruption bureau;

melamine does the work of nuclear weapons.”

When asked if he likes Hong Kong or wants to immigrate,

he said Hong Kong is very strange, he is not used to it.

Li Chengpeng: Hong Kong is very strange.

The people dare curse the Chief Executive.

In mainland China, you would be in trouble for

cursing the director of a neighborhood office.

I see that people don』t talk in the subway.

When riding on subway in Beijing, my feet don』t even touch the floor.

Also I don』t need to lose weight.

I would be squeezed into a photo when riding on the subway.

Li hopes that writers and scholars can write for the public

and understand people』s suffering.

He encourages the mainland students to

bring Hong Kong』s ethos of freedom back to China.

Li Chengpeng: “I hope those students from mainland

can follow the Hong Kong people』s lead,

and dare stand up for the world and study well.

Don』t trust the gun (i.e. military) and pen (press) too much,

if you think a country can be managed with the gun and pen,

then (you) must be a stupid thug.”

As his readers were enthusiastic,

his talk was extended from 1.5 hour to 2 hours.

Many fans stood for two hours,

waiting in line for his autographs.
