Protesters Arrested During Biden』s Visit

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden visited Chengdu City

in Sichuan Province on August 21

and gave a speech at Sichuan University.

Biden said he hopes China will improve its human rights

conditions, in order to make real social advances.

However, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) arrested many

Chengdu protestors who planned a sit-in, during his speech.

More than 50 people were arrested or put under house arrest.

The scene made a mockery of Biden』s visit.

Biden arrived in Chengdu City on Air Force Two on Aug. 20.

During his speech at Sichuan University, he said that

the biggest ideological difference between the U.S. and China

centers around human rights issues.

He said that he hopes China will become a free country

by improving its human rights conditions.

Many activists think that the CCP』s arrest of protestors and

dissidents, and preventing them from meeting with Biden,

was a major disappointment to Biden.

Upon learning that the Governor of Calif. was coming to visit,

One activist in Sichuan said that officials became very nervous

even before Biden had arrived in Chengdu.

Police warned protestors and dissidents and also prohibited

earthquake victim』s family from protesting.

According to 64Tianwang.com, at least 50 people were

either arrested or put under house arrest during Biden』s visit.

Officials also warned Huang Qi, in charge of 64tianwang.com,

“Sit tight. Stay at home. And don』t look for trouble!”

Because Huang is an alumnus of Sichuan University,

he was told that he and other 64tianwang.com volunteers

were prohibited from entering Sichuan University.

Huang hopes that Biden and the international community will

learn more about the human rights situation in China.

Huang Qi: “During Biden』s visit to China,

the CCP suppressed protestors,

which is not only against basic diplomatic etiquette,

but is also disrespectful to VP Biden and the U.S. government.

We call on the CCP to face the problem, stop its repression,

and help improve the human rights conditions in China.

I also hope that Biden will have a chance to converse

with everyday Chinese citizen.”

Li Zhaoxiu from Shuangliu County in Chengdu

lost her home due to forced demolition.

She was stopped by more than 10 officials

on her way to Chengdu on August 19.

Although she managed to escape and traveled to Chengdu,

she was later arrested at the front door of Sichuan University.

Wang Hui, who accompanied Li to the University, told NTD,

“There were people at the Sichuan University north entrance.

Li Shaoxiu recognized some of the police officers

from Shuangliu, who tried to stop her from going to Chengdu.

She tried to walk away, but was taken into a police car.”

Another protestor, Hu Jinqiong, said that she just wanted to

listen to Biden』s talk on human rights and its relevant laws

and regulations, but was taken away in a police car.

When she saw how many plainclothes police were on campus,

she thought it was ridiculous.

We just wanted to learn about human rights laws to protect

ourselves, but they made a big deal out of it.

These policemen were there to arrest protestors!”

Chengdu』s Wenjiang District resident, Ren Hengchao,

also lost his home due to forced demolition.

He read in the newspaper about Biden』s speech,

so he planned to attend with more than 20 people

in order to tell Biden how badly the CCP treated them.

Ren said that their phones were probably tapped on the day

before the speech, and everyone was placed under house arrest.

Two were detained for 12 and 15 days, respectively.

Ren: “One (person) was detained for 12 days, another for 15.”

According to 64tianwang.com, petitioner Gan Xinyan arrived

and observed at the university on August 19,

The next morning, without any documents, police broke into

her home, put her in shackles and handcuffs and took her away.

She was asked many times, “Why were you at the event?!”

Sichuan-based writer, Ran Yunfei, who is awaiting trial

on charges of “inciting subversion of state power,”

was under house arrest, so he could not be reached.

Deutsche Welle contacted another Sichuan-based activist,

Chen Yunfei by phone.

Chen said, “It is impossible to talk to Biden directly

about the human rights situation in China,

because before he arrived in Chengdu,

many protestors and petitioners were under strict surveillance.

As a result, they were prevented from seeing Biden.
