10,000 Wukan Villagers Plan Petition, Protests Sweep East Guangdong

Wukan villagers decided to go out of the village and go to

the city hall when they had an assembly.

It's estimated that there will be 10,000 villagers

joining the petition.

They will ask the local government to return the body of

the dead villagers' representative, Xue Jinbo, and to release the other 4 villagers,

and also will ask central government to be involved in

the investigation.

Now, Wukan villagers have formed an anti-violence movement,

the protest is sweeping the east part of Guangdong Province.

Including Longtou Village, Lufeng County, many villages have

started or are prepared to protect their rights.

An anonymous Wukan villager said, Wukan village assembly

decided to break the block by the soldiers and police,

and to go to the county hall on Dec. 21.

They plan to carry an empty coffin which is prepared

for holding the body of Xue Jingbo.

So far it's confirmed that there will be 10,000 villagers joining

the petition, and it's estimated that villagers from other villages will also join the petition.

Villagers will tie white cloths on their hands, wear white flower

on the coat, hold flags and banners and shout slogans along the way.

Villager A says: "Basically it's confirmed. If the government

hasn't answered before Dec. 21, we may petition the city hall.

Basically it has been decided. We brought the coffin this

afternoon, and will carry it to city hall to ask for the body.

We will ask them to release the villagers and give us the answer.”

Currently Wukan village is sealed by the authorities,

which has led to a shortage of materials.

Many from other places have donated grain, cooking oil, etc.

to Wukan, and party secretaries from 21 other villages came there on Dec. 19 to find out the situation.

Villager B says: "Starting from yesterday, neighboring

townships donated grain to us.”

The Police used both “carrot and stick” to convince the

villagers to give up the protest, and have threatened to arrest Xue Jinbo's family members.

Villagers pointed out that the authorities have threatened

Xue's family on the phone that they will arrest them.

The officials from the city have also said that they will shoot

temporary representatives dead, and will send others to Qinghai.

The villagers also were threatened that the armed police could

break into the village at any time.

Wukan villagers are in a panic, many children have been

scared sick.

In the night, nearly a hundred villagers stayed in several

positions to monitor the action of the armed police.

They are afraid that they will carry out a night raid.

But Wukan's action has been a demonstration to others.

The protest wave is spreading in East Guangdong.

In Longtou Village of Lufeng County, there has been a protest

that had more than one thousand protesters.

Including from village of Longguang, Bailan and Qisha,

There are many villages next to Wukan preparing for protests.

Xinan town Denghai district of Shantou has a village protest.

Nearly a thousand villagers from Shangdaimei village protested on Dec. 18.

The protesters hold flags and banners that are marked

“We Are Waking Up! Shangdaimei Villagers are Protecting Their Rights”,

“Under Official Force, Citizens are Helpless”,

“Official Attitude isn't Correct”.

They blamed the officials who sold the land

without villagers' permission.

It's reported that Xinan town government has asked for

reinforcement, but Chenghai district government answered that,

since most of the armed police are in Shanwei city,

Chenghai district authorities are unable to deal with the protest.

On the morning of Dec.20, thousands of demonstrators were

protesting against government plans to build a power plant in Haimen town Shantou city.

The demonstrators occupied the town's government building.

Witnesses said, the high road from Shenzhen to Shantou was

blocked and that there are tens of thousands protesters in the road.

The Police cars were turned over, and shops were closed.

Following this, Guangzhou netizens assembled on Dec. 17 to

support Wukan, Shenzhen university's ' students also organized activities to support Wukan.

They hold banners with the slogan “Concerned and Supporting

the Villagers of Wukan”.

There have also been supporting activities by Hong Kong Alliance,

civil organizations and so on.

Netizens have also posted many articles on line to support Wukan.

When there's hundreds of international media are deeply

focused on the progress in Wukan, there's no local media report anything about Wukan in China.

Professor Hu Xingdou, a Chinese issues' expert has told media,

that China has entered a risk period.

If the central government doesn't take any action,

social unrest issues will become worse and worse.

The 200 million farmer-workers inside China's cities are the

potential supporters to their rural family.

If that they protest, the situation will be more complicated.
