Arrested for Being a “Third-Rate Artist”?

Can Ai Weiwei be arrested for being “third-rate”?

Chinese netizens side with Ai after official media

of Chinese Communist Party (CCP) defamed

the artist. It is said that long after

the Culture Revolution, it』s repressive form remains.

The crackdown on dissidents seems endless.

Defamatory articles were questioned by the public

when reprinted by other Chinese media.

While questioning such articles, people ask,

can Ai be arrested for being “third-rate”?

U.S.-based commentator Heng He: “It』s obvious that

CCP is manipulating the assault by the media,

like other defamatory attacks in CCP』s history,

which are known as the 『Great Criticism.』”

Ai was condemned by CCP』s Xinhua News Agency

for copying artist Yue Luping』s work. Yue denied it.

On April 17, Yue made public a threatening e-mail

he received, which read “Shut up or die.”

Similar 『Great Criticism』 was widely used in the

Culture Revolution, yet only appeared twice after.

One was after the democratic movements in 1989.

The other was the suppression of Falun Gong,

which started in 1999, and continues to this day.

Wang Weiluo, a German-based Chinese scholar,

said that CCP was persecuting all Chinese people,

when it constantly repressed the minorities in China.

Ai』s investigation on the death toll of students

who died during the Sichuan earthquake

was a job that CCP failed to do.

For this, Wang felt obliged to speak up for Ai.

Wang: “CCP starts its crackdowns with minorities.

First landlords, then the capitalists, then intellectuals.

Which is worth considering by all. Which group

hasn』t been attacked over the past six decades?”

Radio Free Asia quoted netizen “daofeichang”:

“Ai』s arrest is a replay of the Culture Revolution,

which is an endless and reckless act of autocratism.”

Starting from April 17, initiated by overseas artists,

people in Japan, Germany and the UK all responded

to the “1001 Chairs for Ai” campaign. Many silently

sit on chairs outside Chinese embassies.

In a 2007 exhibition in Germany, Ai laid 1001 chairs

as an installation art piece. He named it 『Fairy Tale.』
