“Radical Thoughts” at Universities

China's two most prestigious universities recently

have implemented their own “stability” measures.

Peking University announced that it would have

consultation with students with "radical thoughts”.

Tsinghua University organized seminars for students

to be "loyal to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)".

These measures are repugnant to the public opinion,

which believes that the universities control speech

cooperating with the regime to “maintain stability”.

According to Peking University』s (PU) web site,

10 designated student groups will have consultation,

e.g. such with academic difficulties, radical thoughts,

psychological vulnerability, Internet addiction, etc.

Faculties will identify and designate such students.

『Radical thoughts』 is the most controversial group.

Beijing Evening News quotes Vice Minister,

Cha Jing, at PU』s CCP administrative department,

explaining that there are some students who

often exaggerate minor flaws at PU: "such criticize

the School for charging more for food”.

Cha』s words caused strong reactions from students.

Some pointed out on micro-blogs on Sina.com that

PU cannot even tolerate minor criticism: “It should

be renamed to Peking Communist Party School.”

A student said to Radio Free Asia (RFA): I don't

have time for this. I see these as very silly things.”

The public opinion also criticizes the universities.

Xi'an Evening News pointed out that

"thoughts" are a result of thinking activities.

Right or wrong, they don』t harm the society.

There is no need for the outside world to intervene.

Its absurd to have consultations for 』radical thoughts』.

Chinese Internet columnist Liu Yiming believes,

attacking students with 』radical thoughts』 is, in fact,

controlling students』 thoughts and expression.

PU was famous with its doctrine called

"inclusion and freedom of thought".

Scholar Ling Cangzhou told RFA in Beijing, that this

measure is an insult to PU』s founding purpose.

Ling: “Even students with 』independent lives』 need

consultation. What is this? What is radical opinion?』

Chen Duxiu and Hu Shi were also students at PU.

Their thoughts could be perceived as radical.

This provision is totally incompatible with PU. Such

self-castration of the university is long-standing.”

Deutsche Welle quoted Prof. Xia Yeliang from PU,

saying that the university』s current student control

is the "most serious in its history". It could be due

to the current tense situation in China. He believes,

"the radical thought consultation is a warning.

If students attempt to participate in some events,

they will be attacked by the School as enemies”.

Xia said that other universities often conduct

the so-called 』political and ideological teaching』.

The Schools』 party bureaus often organize activities

for students to prevent them from free thinking. On

sensitive days, students aren』t expected to go out.

Another prestigious Chinese university, Tsinghua,

recently used the theme "loyalty to the CCP" to

organize seminars, promoting CCP』s “grandness”.

Co-founder of China Democratic Party, Qin Yongmin

said, this could make Chinese realize more clearly

the contrast between China and the civilized world.

Chinese PEN member Chen Shuqing said:

"A national should love his country but not the party.

Parents and taxpayers pay students』 fees, not CCP.

Why should they be required to be loyal to it?”

In Hubei, Wuhan University of Technology and

Hubei School of Economics issued 』travel bans』

prohibiting students to organize private group trips.

It is suspected that this is to prevent students

from joining the Jasmine rallies.

This ideological work at PU and TU by CCP

is aimed at maintenaning the party』s stability.

Hubei-based commentator Liu Yiming called

this absurd, "Universities should be learning places,

not places for shameless flattering.”

NTD reporters Wang Ziqi ,Wu Wei and Wang Mingyu.
